6 Ingredients To Avoid In Skincare Products
We all want the best for ourselves and the loved ones next to us. We tend to choose products based on peer recommendation, beautiful packaging or lovely scent. Often we forget that there is a lack of regulation when it comes to ingredients in the cosmetics industry, and not all the products are safe to use.
What to avoid, and why?
We have listed some ingredients for you might want to watch out.
Parabens are used as preservatives in skincare and make-up products. Parabens disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate contribute foaming and lathering properties to cleansing products and bubble bath. They can cause skin and eye irritations, cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea if ingested. Sodium Laureth Sulfate isn't easily degrading and stays in the environment for a long time. When washed down the drain, it can also be toxic to sea animals.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is petroleum-based compounds that are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. They are commonly used as cosmetic cream bases. It's a skin irritant that can cause skin cell growth and damage cell membranes, causing rashes, dry skin, and surface damage.
Formaldehyde is used as a preservative but is a respiratory irritant that can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and nose and throat irritation. It can also cause cancer and has been linked to an increased risk of asthma and allergies in kids.
Oxybenzone is mainly used as a filter in synthetic sunscreens. It can alter thyroid function and is a known hormonal disruptor. Using sunscreens containing oxybenzone is also harmful to the environment as it leaches from the skin into the sea.
Fragrance commonly contains phthalates, which are chemicals that help the scents last longer. Health risks for phthalates include cancer, hormone disruption leading to congenital disabilities and respiratory problems.
How to avoid?
It may seem quite hard to try to avoid all the harmful chemicals in your skincare products and make-up. There are a couple of easy solutions for this - certified organic cosmetics never contain the ingredients listed above, so they are safe to use. If you are using synthetic products, keep your eyes open, and study ingredients lists - not all of them contain harmful ingredients.
